Are you someone who doesn’t own a sewing machine but wants to? Maybe you’re just not sure what type of sewing machine you’d like to purchase? If you are either of the two, one thing is certain – don’t let it stop you from learning how to sew. One of the best alternatives out there is to rent a sewing machine. So if you wondered whether that was possible or not, there’s your answer.
Now, when it comes to renting, you need to consider the fact that there are rental fees. A renting fee is liable to change and is based on factors such as the company itself and the type of the program. What do we mean by this? For example, some companies tend to offer rental services to just about anyone. Others are a little bit selective when it comes to that. Therefore, they only allow you to rent their sewing machines as a part of a craft class. In the following sections, we’ll explore both options.
Finding a sewing machine for rent basically depends on what you want to do with it. For example, if you urgently have to sew something, there are companies that offer 2-hour rentals. On the other hand, you can get access to a sewing machine through one of the available class programs. Essentially, there are companies for each of these services.
Companies such as Craft-South, Crosscut Sewing Co., Bobbin and Ink, etc. offer their clients an option to rent a sewing machine for home use. In most cases, there’s a refundable security deposit for each rental fee, but that’s to be expected. You can also rent a sewing machine through online peer-to-peer renting sites such as Zilok. The machines are roughly the same (as are the rental fees). The only difference is that you apply for a sewing machine rental through an online form which acts as your reservation.
Going to a craft class is another valid option. You won’t be renting a sewing machine there, but you’ll definitely get access to one. The greatest advantage of these classes is that your time with a sewing machine isn’t so limited. Companies such as Joann usually offer their clients something like that (more on that later).
The final option would be to check with the local stores that sell sewing machines to see if they have one that you can use. Alternatively, you could visit a tailor or a Senior Center and ask to rent theirs. However, keep in mind that there will probably be a charge for these services.
We mentioned Joann briefly when we talked about the available sewing machine rental places. Well, it’s worth saying that Joann is one of the leading sewing companies in the United States. That alone might be the reason why they’re so selective with the services that they provide. However, they’ve recently shifted their focus from their products to their shoppers. The main idea is to create a memorable experience for their customers in hopes of keeping them around. In other words, they want to give their customers something to do besides shopping.
Even though Joann isn’t particularly fond of renting their products, sewing machine rental is actually available. However, it’s part of their ‘studio’ where customers can grab a cup of coffee and rent out the necessary tools for their projects.
The company is mostly focused on their ‘Creator’s Studio’ which is both a classroom and a place for community events. Their clients can apply for and attend their sewing classes. That way, they get access to one of their sewing machines. There is a fee for the program and it depends on the number of classes and the type of the lecture. The only drawback of the program is that you have to follow it, meaning that you can’t use the machine for your own projects.
The rental fees tend to go a bit up with the companies that are more popular. In some cases, they even go up to $30. However, in general, the starting fee is somewhere around $10 for an hour and it can go slightly up (depending on the machine). However, some companies decide to include their promotional prices in order to attract more people. For example, people can use Craft South’s Janome 4120 model for two hours and pay just $15!
Renting a sewing machine as a part of a craft class program is a bit more expensive. You’re basically buying the whole program and paying for several classes at once. These programs can even go up to $150, but we’re sure that there are cheaper alternatives out there!
‘Compound walkers’ or industrial sewing machines are really hard to come by due to their extreme price. Therefore, only better-equipped shops/companies will have them and they’ll have higher rental fees for them. We’ve come across several companies that offer them such as ‘Sewing Machine Service’ (the name of the company) and ‘The Camp Couture’. Our advice is to visit their websites and browse through the selection of the available models. They have popular brands such as Juki, Highlead, Pfaff, Consew, Union Special, Durkopp-Adler, etc.
Depending on the specified rental duration, industrial sewing machines can cost from $40 to $60 dollars per day. The customers have to make an appointment first before they’re allowed to take the machine. Some of these shops only have one industrial machine which is why they’re so thorough when it comes to the renting process.
To conclude, we’d like to make a claim that finding a sewing machine for rent doesn’t have to be a complicated process as many people say. In fact, it’s quite simple if you know where to look. The main goal of this article was to inform you about the relevant companies and places where you can rent the machines. Hopefully, we were able to do just that!
