How Much Does a Sewing Machine Weight? (33 Examples)

Baby’s birth weight is always noted. Everyone wants to know how big the child was when he or she was born. They make special note of the first weigh in with pride. Knowing the weight of a baby or a sewing machine is important to a lot of people.

How much does a sewing machine weigh? The weight of a sewing machine is relative to its size and how big the motor is. On average, you can find sewing machines weighing between 10 and 30 pounds. Larger machines, especially industrial models, will weigh more than that.

To learn all about sewing machine weights just keep reading our article. It has the information you need to make sure you can find a machine that is not too heavy for your sewing machine table or cabinet.

Sewing Machine Weight in kg

Sewing-Machine-Weight-in-kg

The pound to kilogram equation is quite simple. Far more simple than mm to inches equation. It takes 2.2 pounds to equal 1 kg so figuring out the weight of a sewing machine is not that difficult. Just divide 11 pounds by 2.2 and you end up with 5 kgs.

For the figures mentioned above, a 10-pound sewing machine would weigh about 4 1/2 kg and a 30-pound model would weigh about 13 to 14 kg, give or take a few grams.

That should help you figure out if your new sewing machine is light enough to fit in your sewing table, etc.

Sewing Machine Weight Comparison

We can’t possibly list all the different sewing machine models and make a comparison of their weight. But we selected a few models of each brand to give you an idea. You’ll find a table for each brand below.

It is not a complete list, but it gives you a great amount of information.

Portable Sewing machine Weight

Portable-Sewing-machine-Weight

The good news here is that the portable sewing machines, no matter their brand, are going to weigh a lot less than those you place on your sewing table for a permanent attachment.

Their weight range will be from close to 10 pounds but under that threshold to about 13 pounds with an allowance of a few ounces either way. You won’t be carrying a lot of weight with you when you have a portable machine to move from place to place.

The best thing to do if you are worried about the weight of the portable you want to buy, is to just go to the brand website and see how much it really weighs.

Old Antique Sewing machine Weight

Old-Antique-Sewing-machine-Weight

You would expect that the old antique sewing machines weighed quite a lot. And they did. They were made from strong heavy metal so they were not easy to move. But there is one old Singer, a vintage model, that weighed about 11 pounds.

This was the Singer 221 and by the looks of it, the machine was quite tiny.

Industrial sewing machine weight. Other antique machines are going to weigh a lot more, somewhere in the neighborhood of top Bernina machines made in their Swiss factory.

Some of the old machines come attached to their own carrying cases, etc. So that would add some weight to their overall size.

Weight of an Industrial Sewing Machine With Table

It is possible that you may think that industrial sewing machines with tables weigh a lot. But that would be a misconception as one model with table comes in at 31kg. That would translate into about 68 pounds.

Another model would not surprise you as it clocks in at about 240 pounds. Give or take the weight of packaging, etc. There is a wide range when it comes to the weight of an industrial sewing machine.

A lot would depend on the weight of the construction materials and how top quality they were.

Singer Sewing Machine Weight

We are going to go through the same issue with this weight category as we did with the dimension one. All sewing machines do not weigh the same and even the same company produces models that come in different weight classes.

Singer has several models that fit between the almost 15-pound class to the just over 16 pound one. Two models almost reach 17 pounds, with one hitting 22 pounds on the nose.

That model is the CE 150 Futura, and it is the heaviest Singer sewing machine recorded on our list.

Brother Sewing Machine Weight

This company seems to make a lot of lighter machines than Singer. Their top weighing sewing machine hits 24 pounds approx. With 2 coming in at 20. But those are the exceptions to the rule.

The majority of Brother sewing machines fall into the just under 10 pounds to 15-pound weight class with a couple more exceptions ringing in at 17. This lack of weight does not make the Brother sewing machine an inferior model.

It just means that the company has found a way to implement lighter construction materials while maintaining their quality level.

Juki Sewing Machine Weight

That comparison chart lists only one Juki sewing machine. That seems to be a remarkable oversight as we are sure that the company makes more than just one 16 pound sewing machine.

In fact, we checked and found that the majority of their machines range between 21 and just over 25 pounds. They are a heavier machine which hopefully translates into a more dependable and durable product.

Juki is even heavier than Janome sewing machines in some model classes. Their machines also beat Singer’s by up to 7 pounds in some cases.

Usha Sewing Machine Weight

Usha-Sewing-Machine-Weight

One model we found, the dream stitch, weighs in at about 6.52 kgs or roughly 14 pounds give or take an ounce or three. The Excella model is weighed at 6 kg and that translates into 13.2 pounds.

It seems that Usha and Janome are now the same company as we checked the Usha website and they list the Janome brand name next to its brand name. This may mean that their sewing machine models are not going to get too heavy although we are sure you can will find some over 20 pounds under the Usha name.

Janome Sewing Machine Weight

While Janome hits the upper end of the weight scale in most comparisons, they are still far lighter than the Juki models. Most of Janome’s sewing machines are in the upper teens around 17 and 18 pounds each.

Not one crosses the 20-pound threshold or even hits it on the nose. Their HD 1000 is not on our list but it does go past the 20 pound mark and reaches 22.8 pounds.

That is the one exception to the rule that Janome is like Brother in that it produces lighter weighing machines when compared to their competitors.

Bernina Sewing Machine Weight

Bernina-Sewing-Machine-Weight

In looking at Bernina products we find the Chicago 7 model registering a large 26 pounds weight.

The Bernette Swiss is about 11 pounds lighter coming in at just over 15 pounds and the Bernette 35 is just over 16. We looked on the Bernina website but became frustrated as their web pages did not really display any weight for their sewing machines.

But we were successful in finding out some of the weights of their top of the line sewing machines. The 530 is almost 34 pounds, with the 830 at 50 and the B580E at 63 1/2 lbs.

Kenmore Sewing Machine Weight

The old Kenmores weighed about 30 pounds or more. That may be because they were lacking in plastic parts and the company used mostly metal to put their machines together.

A newer model, the Kenmore Ultra mini, is a bit on the small side and it only weighs in at about 10 pounds. So you will have a wide range of Kenmore sewing machine range and depending on the model your weight will vary as well.

We tried looking for other Kenmore updated models but none appeared in any of our searches.

Some Final Words

If you are like us, you are probably hating the word ‘depends’. It is a word that is used a lot in these topics because there is no real standard of weight that can be used. Everything depends on the Brand maker, the model, the materials used, and so much more.

As you can see the weights of any given sewing machine fluctuate a lot. Some brands try to stay competitive by making models that weigh the same as their competitors. Suffice it to say, you need to look at the weight of each one you are interested in and make your buying decision.
